The really early sci-fi programs are always a gggle when seen today. It's always a surprise to see a well-known actor like Lee J. Cobb try to do something decent with a hideously limited role. It seems that this is a kinescope version of what was originally a live broadcast. Notice how in the opening scene, Cobb seems to suddenly freeze, as if incapable of pronouncing the word "troposphere." Even for prehistoric sci-fi, the production values are absurdly low. Even ignoring the crude model rocket and incessantly droning soap opera organ music, the supposed executive-level office of the corporate bigwig is as dilapidated and dirty as the apartment in "The Honeymooners."

Before and after Sputnik, there was plenty of speculation about how humans would get into space. Private industry? Government effort? And what would be needed to make the project work?

This episode became dated the moment the Soviets launched Laika the dog, never mind the Apollo lunar landing.

When I first saw Harry Townes walk in, I thought 'Men In Black', and I also knew how the episode would end. The cliche had to come from somewhere.

The first time Crowder said that they were to go ahead and build the rocket without first having an engine to put it in, you saw every Aerospace Engineer laugh. They build the spaceship to put a payload into space, but you have to build the engine big enough to put it and it's payload into space. Cute model though, I wonder whatever happened to it.

Another great Kreisler ad. How can any watch not look new when you put it in a Pistol Box? Of course the surprise ending helped make this one better than it would have been otherwise. It's almost a slog to get through it.
