Thanks for the observation of the women being so negative to the men.
It wasn't accidental but there was a big push for "normality" at that time after the war and not to be crazy. This was pushed by the thinkers and media at the time especially Sigmund Freud's daughter who was living in the US and a big adviser to media, business, and government. So the movies' focus on the evils of insanity brought to us one spectrum 3 FACES OF EVE and HARVEY on the other.
Growing up at that time the wife and mother's job seem to be to focus on normality whatever that was. Even if you didn't have it, it was good to pretend you did. The women stopping the men on their pursuits was pretty typical. If you look at the old radio shows, the HONEYMOONERS, or even the FLINTSTONES you see that cropping up all the time. In real life I saw that. Even Robert Bly and Herb Goldberg talks about it in some of their books on men.
Economically, it was important for the wife to keep him working and not going off course. There must have had a lot going on with the men and having to live these roles they were playing with all the alcohol and cigarettes they were consuming.
Geez, what a great observation! Hulu is great.
