As a Master Sergeant in the United States Army, I have had the prestigious honor to begin my career as a brand new Sergeant in the Honor Guard. I was dedicated to ensure nothing less than a flawless mission for those who have lost their loved ones and I have had the distinct honor to present over 450 folded American Flags to grieving widows, mothers, sister, and Fathers. 47 of those, were Active Duty Soldiers. It is never an easy task, but it is without a doubt, an honorable one. During my time, I led my squad to win distinguished squad competion 8 months consecutive, was promoted to Staff Sergeant, and was then requested to be the Platoon Sergeant, ensuring the strict standards I set forth for my squad were now instilled further throughout the platoon. Looking back, it was the absolute best position and honor I have ever been bestowed. In addition, I had the great opportunity to train with the 3rd Infantry, the Old Guard at Fort Meyers. There, the tasked platoon to assist our visit took us to an indoor ceremony. During that ceremony, two Soldiers within the flag detail had fallen out. After the ceremony, the entire formation exited the ceremonial building (I think a gymnasium) and waited until all visitors departed. Then the formation of troops came back in to redo their entire ceremony, as a form of corrective training that nothing less than strict discipline, customs, courtesy, and respect is accepted. The next day, we were escorted to the Tomb of the Unknowns, where we witnessed what they call "A wreathing". This video is a great example of the discipline, honor, and demanding standards the Guards at the Tomb of teh Unknows uphold on a daily basis and I am honored to have met such fine examples of what it means to be a Soldier, a Marine, a Sailor, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard member of the Armed Forces. And as you see, #428 was revoked from the Tomb of the Unknowns. They uphold the highest of standards even long after they are gone. Unfortunately, many don't know that the first woman who earned the Tomb of the Unknowns was also the first woman to be stripped of her badge for misconduct. (As well as 1 or more male Soldiers). So, as you can see, the honor and prestige to be a part of this elite organization is well kept. I applaud all of you. My brother and sisters and those who have fallen during my 20 years. I hope my pride and attention to detail was enough to ease your pain.Freedom is not free..... MSG Rodney
