There was much beauty and love in the message given about what makes a family in this episode and I enjoyed it very much. However, it just missed the mark for me in a glaringly strong areas - that's why the 4-star rating instead of 5.
*SPOILER DISCUSSED - STOP if you haven't viewed the episode yet*
1) Why wasn't it possible for the baby to be brought into the communal family?
Obviously there wouldn't have been THE problem to solve in this episode had the baby been able to stay inside the 'commune' but not to have any reasonable explanation for taking the baby from its parents was a real let-down.
"It's a world without pity for its children" was the only "explanation" I heard but that wasn't at all satisfactory.
2) Was the message supposed to mean that it's because of the love parents have for their children that we're all so messed up??
Shaw was apparently the first male to demonstrate real adult love by the any members of the commune (rejecting a new but still physically attractive-to-him partner = monogamy) so wasn't THAT the beginning of the "end" of the aliens' attempt to create another Garden of Eden? How much evil and how many murders are done when a third enters-into/breaks-up a formerly monogamous couple? More, I think, than instances that involve parents and their children.
3) Since the aliens were so adept at using DNA to generate living beings, why didn't they do that for themselves as well? Unless I missed it, I didn't see 1 scene with any alien babies/children.
Still, like I said, I enjoyed the episode. I just think it could have been better.
