First, he is willing to take the loss for the team when his ideas fails. Usually, in previous boardroom sessions, there would always be an ugly fight. Gene doesn't want an ugly fight.
Second, he is playing with Trump's mind. He picked himself, and Omarosa, the (only) two characters that generate ratings for the show. In a way I feel that he is protesting against the rules of the show.
Third, I think he is just bored with the Apprentice game, as he did not agree with the rules of it. Besides, it does no good to his image if he had to fight nastily with other celebrities in order to stay on. As he had already gotten a cheque, this is almost a winning situation for him - I mean, I would remember him if not because of these first three shows.
Without him, I feel like the rest of the show would just be junk, and stupid office politics.
