How about traveling from one community to another? Railroad infrastructure would need to be improved substantially or completely replaced in order for your concept to work. Amtrak may stop in my hometown and my parents hometown (well, not right now, due to flood damage), but it doesn't come anywhere near my grandmother's town. Should I walk the 80 miles?
Even public transportation within a community isn't always attractive. Where I live, and with the job I hold, I can ride the bus for free. However, because of my schedule, I either can't get to work or can't get home on it due to it's operating schedule. Also, it would take me over 2 hours and several transfers to get someplace I can drive to in under 15 minutes. It's actually cheaper for me to own/drive my car than it would be to take the bus and pay for the extra daycare.
Do you have any idea how much infrastructure it would take to make your conveyor belt idea for goods work? Downtown NYC used to use pneumatic tubes to deliver messages. As things like the telephone and fax machine became more ubiquitous it was abandoned. You would need something 10X as large to handle even moderately sized packages. And, you would need to install it all over the country.
It's a nice pipe dream, but that's all it is. You're not talking about billions or even trillions of dollars here. It would most likely be hundreds of trillions of dollars worth of new construction. Something like that would take a century or more to accomplish.   See 6 other replies
