I have a rather different take on the idea of hind leg feathers as a aerodynamics major. If micro raptor were to splay its legs out to say the 45-degree limit proposed in the documentary. They would cancel out their side forces and create some lift as well as provide directional stability. So it is a valid option for it to have the conventional leg positions. See 1 other reply

The feathers of the hind leg on this animal look similar to those of the domestic pigeon, e.g., Swallows, Trumpeters, Wing Pigeons, etc.. For years, I've wondered by the leg feathers are identical to primaries, this would explain it. I've little doubt that the same gene complexes that produce feathers on the leg of the microrapter also produce them on the pigeons, where the feathers are also similar to the primaries.

Last I heard Magellan died in the Philippines. Great analogy, too bad it is wrong.
