I don't think anyone can really replace the Shakespearean pathos of Jonathan Frid, but this production from 1991 certainly tries to fill the space left by Frid with production values, which it has in spades. The cinematography is lovely, reminiscent of the pilot to Twin Peaks: rich and dark and heavily atmospheric. I very much enjoyed it. I love the original Dark Shadows, too, but I think that if it is done well, it's hard to exhaust Dan Curtis' gothic world. Like Barnabas himself, it's always seductive.
