That's not true. I think Andy's gay roommate had a pretty healthy seeming relationship. Then there was the bartender who refused to sleep with the bachelorette. He wasn't so bad. I don't think we needed to see a healthy sexual relationship to know they exist. We know they exist...just not with these characters. I'm rather baffled by the Christian right propaganda comment. There were some interesting moments like the cross and the God is Love light, but oddly I wasn't sure if those weren't meant to be ironic. After reading the director's comments I remain convinced the goal was to encourage safe, consensual sex, rather than to demonize all sex. Further, do you think that only those who align themselves as both Christian and right-wing promote healthy sexual relationships? I'm sure there are liberal Christians who understand that sex can be bad and unsafe. I know there are liberal non-Christians and libertarians and any other kind of -crats, or -licans, or -tians out there, "left" or "right" who would be completely on board with the message of this moving. I thought the movie was very depressing...until I read the comments and realized they were more depressing than the movie could ever hope to be. You all thought that line was funny? I found it pitiful. The poor man was beside himself with frustration and grief. That's not funny. Please indeed. The creation of an SSRI didn't cause doctors to begin to diagnose depression. The stigma around mental illness has been slowly decreasing over the years, and more and more people and doctors are taking it seriously. People haven't changed; what is socially acceptable and recognized by the medical community has, and taking a couple neuroscience classes in college doesn't make a person an expert on the complexities of mental illness. The government had nothing to do with the purported "fearmongering" in the film. This was a work that was clearly making a statement about carelessness and sexual behavior, not just sexual behavior. Wear a condom and make good choices. That's not such a bad message is it?   See 4 other replies
