I wasn't as interested in this episode, because the police are the victims, and I kind of see that in the same light as I see movies made about being in the movies. I thought it was self-indulgent of the show to be all about the police.
However, this episode paints a very human portrait of the police, and the role of the older policeman's wife is especially well acted. It is really fun to watch several shows in the Dragnet series and realize you are seeing the same bit players playing different roles, and this episode is no exception with respect to this role of the older policeman's wife. After viewing six or more of her performances, I think this is the best performance I've seen from this actress thus far.
Seeing it makes you realize that police are humans and many sacrifice for a job that they love. though they could be doing something different and easier with less stress. They find purpose in the work, and the satisfaction of feeling that they are serving others well makes the effort required to do the job seem a bit lighter.
