I remember an incident at the airport in Philadelphia from the last time I traveled by plane (2006). I was standing in line at the airport, and there was a gentleman in front of me in line. I learned later that he was of the Sikh faith. He had a turban head dressing. Several airport security people walked up and asked him to come with them. He asked why, since he was waiting to go to his gate for boarding. They asked again that he go with them for "security reasons" and he left with them. I learned later that he had been taken out of line, because of suspicion about his turban. Security thought he might have been hiding something in the turban and wanted him to remove it.
I couldn't understand what happened in front of me. Here was a man, another American, who was waiting to board his plane, and because of his outward expression of religion, he was removed by security and asked to prove that he is not a terrorist. I can't understand the pervasive hate and fear surrounding people who express themselves differently than others.
