He was listing the advantages he & Alex have as a juxtaposition to non-white, uneducated, inarticulate citizens of this country. I think his point was even with these advantages, this lifestyle is still very, very challenging.   See 2 other replies

u lack respect for others in your comments and you sound very naive. Again, wtheck do you know about OK? @ 17(im 26 now) I lived on my own working full time making $5.15/hr, and also going to high school full time. (8a-330p) My rent was $350 and it was in a drug and gang infested area. (And i don't even want to hear "there's no real gangs in OK." I live next to a very active Army base and in the surrounding communities is every possible lifestyle from all over the states, and all over the world. Very diverse. Mex mafia isn't very peachy either.) Many people work their asses off in this world just to have a pot to pizz in, and not everyone has good hands dealt, no matter how hard working, wholesome and honest person they may be. Some people are just plain victims of circumstance. Circumstance can be temporary, with or w/o life-long consequences/hardships/afflictions , and circumstance can be just brutal dictating the capabilities u may or may not be able to aquire.Don't judge, be open-minded, be empathetic, be understanding, be fruitful, be faithful... Excuse me!?!! not everyone who makes min wage "deserves" it. There are many many various reasons why someone might be stuck in a particular situation that can sometimes be nearly impossible to get out of w/o an act of God, especially if you are, male, single w/ no kids. (can't even go to a homeless shelter w/o a background check and a drug test before entering, and that can take awhile. Most have a max amount of days a male can stay, and is usually less than a week) Very little, if any $ help available sometimes. What the heck do u know about oklahoma, ived lived here for most of my life. Free clinics? Free antibiotics? Free stores? not here. I lived in OH for a yr. Yes, cost of living here in OK is a little cheaper, but pay here compared to OH is much much less. It was very easy in OH, akron, kent, stow, area to find a $12-$16 an hour job w/ no experience, good luck trying to find a wage like that in OK w/o a degree or cert. Most factories here pay half salary for first yr and it's even less if you go through a temp agency. And unlike OH, we do not have any state regulated min. wages for specific careers/jobs.
