Bette's character was vain and silly, but she was not obligated to give the doorman $50. If his girlfriend's operation was so critical, I'm sure he could have scraped together the money from family and friends. Why rely on someone who has no emotional connection to him or his girlfriend? Also, he acted very suspiciously when Bette's character sought his "advice." Perhaps if he had not relied on Mrs. Fox's money, he would have been asking everybody he knew to help him get together the money, which would have provided him with an airtight alibi that negated Mrs. Fox's mistaken testimony.
