He would recapitulate this role as a cocksure philanderer opposite Lana Turner in Douglas Sirk's 1959 masterful "Imitation of Life".

Jeanette Nolan (the mother) kicked off her film career opposite Orson Welles as Lady Macbeth in Welles' 1948 version of Macbeth. She also has a meaty role in Fritz Lang's prototypical film noir, "The Big Heat". She was Robert Redford's mother in "The Horse Whisperer", her last film.
