No one who's seen him can forget Raines' superb performances -- one of the most sympathetic Nazis ever depicted in Hitchcock's "Notorious", the morally ambivalent Captain Renault in Curtiz' "Casablanca", the voice of James Whale's "The Invisible Man", the corrupt senator in Capra's "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". Raines was the first film star to earn $1 million for a single role as Julius Caesar in Pascal's 1945 film version of GBS' "Caesar and Cleopatra". He also taught acting to Sir John Gielgud and Sir Laurence Olivier at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Oh, and Betsy von Furstenberg (Elizabeth Caroline Maria Agatha Felicitas Therese, Freiin von Fürstenberg-Hedringen) is an honest-to-goodness baroness.
