Both shows have flashes of brilliance, but is my humble opinion that if judged by "traditional" comedic criteria, 30 Rock has more of those flashes on a consistent basis.Family Guy, because of the freedom of the cartoon medium, trades more in surrealistic humor, Andy Kaufman-esque techniques, full on gross-out and/or violent Monty Python sight gag humor, Busby Berkeley musical theater song and dance goof-age, political and religious satire and the skewering of sacred cows in general, etc....it reaches and stretches more, and therefore the writing leaves itself more vulnerable to failure, and negative criticism. One thing that Family Guy does NOT do, is play it safe.Controversy is a major component of Family Guy's mission statement and conceptual DNA, which has a tendency to polarize opinions as well.I love to laugh. Both shows get the ably get the job done (at least for me), but both shows employ widely divergent methods to achieve those goals. Its an apples to oranges comparison. Watch both and marvel at their collective creative and comedic genius.
