The manji represents universal harmony and balancing of opposites (for those of you calling it a swastika, a manji can be distinguished in that it points left instead of right). Its referring to Ichigo's unusual inner world.
Bankai basically means second release, if I'm not mistaken.

I am glad someone brought this up. Many people got worked up after seeing that Neji from "Naruto" had this symbol on his forehead, thinking it was a swasica. Viz had to change it to an "X" for the American release because of this. I was afraid the same thing would happen when the "Manji" showed up on the end of Ichigo's bankai, but I guess it was considered discreat enough to be kept, which is a good thing. It seems to be just one more tool Hitleer used to influence people...he basicly started off with things people believed in and ideas they would support to get them behind him then played on their fears to motivate them toward his own causes.He got peoiple to turn against others by convinceing them that they ere the source of their problems. well actualy, the swastica that hitler used is not the same, the arms of it go in diff directions if u look closely, and it was actualy a symbol for good luck as well as a symbol for thorrs hammer, so he dint take it from budda See 8 other replies

i gotta say this post has certainly change my view on that symbol and it's many diverse uses. i use to be blinded by the hate and pain associated with it but now my mind has kinda evolve. its true you learn something new everyday. thank you HULU and renmosk for pointing that out. Manji (the symbol of Ichigo's sword) means the same thing as Bankai does.
