Well it is still worthy of the small franchise of Firefly. It also addresses your issue of Simon rescuing River. While it may be compressed it does a relatively good job wraping things up, not that it doesn't leave you wanting more.   See 9 other replies

The only time there were sounds in space in the movie was around Mr. Universe's planet. And that's understandable because though they looked like they were in space, they were actually in the outer layers of the atmosphere (Serenity crashed relatively quickly to the planet surface, if you remember). There are several hints that Simon was much more involved in rescuing of River in the show, the prominent one being the entire "Ariel" episode - Simon is supposed to be a well-to-do, silver-spoon-in-mouth, archetypal rich kid, and yet he has the ability to fully plan & carry out the biggest heist Mal and Co have ever pulled off (aside from the antique laser) ? that is a major hint that Simon is not being completely honest with his background.It is my understanding that the movie is a severely compressed story worth of several season. The ultimate question of the true identity of the Preacher has not been revealed (though hinted at), and that's going to drive me crazy.   See 9 other replies

I think the camera was supposed to just show his arms and shoulders.Some of the other scenes you never see the controls, probably because they have a camera right in front of him filming his face, so he pretends he's holding controls.But the scene at 1:19:32 is funny because the camera was too far back and it's also weird because there actually is a "steering wheel" you can see in other scenes that he could have been holding for this scene.   See 2 other replies
