The mobile section reminded me of my days hiking the Appalachian trail... 8-10 miles a day over mountainous terrain with an 85 pound pack (go heavy or go home!)... and got me to wondering. Foot care being absolutely essential I learned to wear two pair of socks, so that most of the friction is not between your sock and foot but between the layers of socks. Over 2100 miles from Maine to Georgia and I never suffered a single blister. I'm really surprised that the military hasn't picked up on this simple yet extremely effective technique.
After wandering from camp one day and experiencing the difficulties of being lost, isolated and disoriented without gear 50 miles from the nearest road (old logging roads not withstanding), imagining I was being hunted as I listened to the rifle fire of SERE trainees in the Maine wilderness, and knowing my situation paled in comparison to what these soldiers endure, I have tremendous respect for the mental and physical toll a true survival situation places on a person... and on anyone who can successfully complete this course.
Thanks for the memories - makes me want to get back out there again!
