I can honestly say that I never even heard of Firefly until after I watched the movie Serenity. I remember telling friends of mine to go see it. Luckily a friend told me it was a TV series before the movie. I was shocked and was lucky enough to watch the whole first season in a marathon on the Si-Fi channel. I loved every second of it!
No I had time on my hands and decided to see if Hulu had some episodes and it was nice to see that they did , although not the whole season, but I understand things come on and things go off.
Now I sit here and wonder what was going through the Exec's tiny pea brains at Fox when they cancelled this show. I know I don't speak for an entire demographic, but I have never ran into anyone (who has seen the show) that didn't like it. With great characters and a new and unused backdrop, not to mention descent storylines.
I really haven't watched regular TV in years (with the exception of NCIS) since Quantum Leap went off the air, Today's TV vibe is how to betray anyone and everyone in the world. No honor left...maybe thats why the Exec's dropped it. They didn't understand the underlying tone of the show...whats even worse is that maybe the viewers of todays TV programs don't understand those things either....Well "they can't take the sky from me" and after I finish venting here I am going to purchase the Firefly season (something I should of done years ago), but thank you Hulu for making it available so I can remember what TV can be...if someone gives it a chance.
It is often nicknamed "Buffy in Space" or "Live action Cowboy Bebop." It's criticized as being unoriginal and having only one or two characters that aren't two-dimensional.Admittedly, I can see where these critics are coming from. But so what? Who cares if it's "Cowboy Bebop" in live action? CB, in all its awesomeness, was nothing more than "Brisco County Jr." of the future anyway. My point is, it's virtually impossible for the entertainment media to come up with original scenarios these days. At least let them have some fun.As for Fox cancelling this delightful show, I don't condone it, but I can't say I'm surprised. After all, it is kind of their M.O. (see: Brisco County) and if you really think about it, Firefly has another thing in common with Cowboy Bebop and so many other beautiful anime series: it's pretty powerful as a single season. Ever watch the last two seasons of Stargate SG1? I shudder to think of what would happen to Firefly if it stayed on too long and lost its glory. Joss Whedon does a fantastic job interpreting the nuances of this type of futurescape. Not to mention, his show is fun, entertaining, and his characters are easy to relate to. I'm sure he's a might satisfied with what he's been able to accomplish here.
