First off, this will contain spoilers, so don't read it if you're offended by them. I'm a pretty big fan of Conan the Barbarian, so naturally when I found out about this I wanted to see it. From just the show thumbnails something didn't seem right. But I figured I'd give it a look anyway. Straight from the start I felt a huge scowl spread across my face. The opening narration was awful, it sounded like it was written by a kid who was trying to rip off the opening narration for the first movie with Schwarzenegger in it. It was such a corny, overly pleasant and pea-brained rip off of the movie intro. Then I still thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't really pleased with what I saw after that. The acting was mostly over the top, corny, felt forced and was just bad in general. It felt like they were trying to make another Hercules or Zena but couldn't even get that right. And they seem to have failed to realise that they're NOT the same as Conan in essence.
So here's the key places where they screwed up. First of all, the casting was bad. Especially for Conan. You can't just take some muscular guy and dress him up in something akin to what Conan would wear and then act (badly, I might add) like he's trying to emulate or channel Arnold while forgetting that he's supposed to be Conan, not Arnold. Schwarzenegger played the character, sure. But he did it his way, he did it well and most importantly, he did the character justice. This guy here screwed it all up by using that medium instead of trying to do the character. From what I saw, the other actors seemed rushed, half hearted and insincere too. In fact the only actor that I thought did an okay job was the king, but the camera work even seemed to screw that up somehow.
That's another thing, what's up with the weird close angles and shaky camera work? I felt like I was watching the Blair Witch in high-def or something. It was poorly written too, I can already tell that they're going to screw everything else up without even watching more than one episode, because I gave them the benefit of the doubt enough already and kept getting screwed. But what's up with the skeleton monster telling the king of CIMMERIA that Conan was supposed to usurp his throne and become the new king of Cimmeria? Conan is supposed to become king of AQUILONIA! Not Cimmerian! It was like that in the books, it was like that in the movies. Why'd they have to screw that up here? They even screwed up Crom. He didn't look anything like he's supposed to and Crom doesn't lead, guide or help his people, Crom gives them the abilities to make their own way and that's the end of it. Also, I have dozens of Conan books by Robert Howard as well as other authors. I don't recall Crom ever speaking to Conan through a sword.
I could go on and on about this, but I won't. I touched on key points and I'm pretty much done. The only redeeming things I see about this series are that the wardrobe and props were decent and at least they guy playing Conan matched the description of the original Conan to some extent, such as physique and eyes (though I have yet to see an actor with black hair play Conan). Everything else was just bad. Period. I might give a later episode a try at some point, but I don't expect it will impress me much more than the pilot episode.
