what bothers me is they say at the start that israelites became the first people to fight and die for their religious beliefs and god... while this is most likely a true statement for monotheistic religions i find it very unlikely to be true when viewed along with non-monotheistic religions. let us not forget that some religions had war gods. other religions held fast to the belief that their king was actually a god. yet others still were concerned with malevolent spirits that could inflict evil upon society. i know that many ancient cultures, which began before judaism, held concepts of religious war and sacrifice. to say that everyone in those cultures committed those acts of atrocity without viewing it in some spiritual way is probably the most ignorant thing i have heard in a documentary. i do concede that the israelites were probably more unified in their view that YHWH probably was paying closer attention... i doubt that all of them viewed it universally as being a religious fight. some probably viewed it as a way to gain status through military conquest, while others probably wanted the wealth, etc. what is more likely is that they may have viewed some of the more climactic battles as being more a fight for their own personal survival rather than to please their god or create a national identity.
