First off, my deepest and most sincere thanks go out to all our soldiers everywhere. I may fear some of the decisions my government makes, but I have the utmost respect for my military. Thank You!
Now, maybe it's just because I'm a country girl / tomboy / (insert name here) - but I assumed the general public had a little more general understanding of survival. No folks, your local conveinence store will not be open in the event you need to know how survive. Credit cards, IPhones, and your OnStar - nope, no and nada.
My view on the calf. Likelyhood of coming across a cow in these situations ? : I'll say 50-50 at best, but beware of the mad farmer -trust me, we'll be keeping an eye on OUR meals. It IS reasonable that they brought in a cow when larger game was not caught because time is a factor in training, and in real life a group of 12 survivors should probably start out with 2 'guys' (no offense ladies) who are hunting up meat in it's many forms. As for putting the animal down, these soldiers are taught the hardest way first - then the rest are easy. Again, in real life, I'd spare a bullet if my shot was worthy. Know how to club an animal in one blow is very important. not only does the animal not suffer, but if an animal is thrashing around it puts the hunter at great risk. And a little FYI for the city folks who may never think of last night's steak outside of the plastic wrap ... I have personally stood witness to several slaughterings, by nail gun, electricution and throat slicing. In my opinion, clubbing in one shot is the MOST humane, followed by well executed nailing or bolting, then throat slicing and lastly electricution - that one is truely sickening. As for one womans comment about the calf eating beforehand and looking all innocent - would you be happier if someone had sat down with the calf, told it how it was going to die, and described it's own best cuts of meat? And honey, if you never see such things again you're blessed, but I suggest you not eat fast food burgers - those cows are not in good shape and die very inhumanely if they live to the slaughterhouse.
You may not feel this training is relevent, and I'm sure not a member of the military ( a regret of mine now that I'm too old to serve), however i trust that the military is trying to instill the mind set neccessary to do all things that must be done in order to say you lived to tell the story. I've only watched 2 episodes so far, but I imagine some things are left out of the videos - at least I hope my government is intelligent enough not to blab all our secrets. I did read all the video descriptions and the training shown does cover a wide gamet of scenarios that could arise in a survival situation.
I gave the video a 4 stars rating in hopes of seeing more intense stuff - previous comment concidered.
