This film was better than Forrest Gump (who won the Academy Award for Best Picture). And it was virtually overlooked in 1994.

Ah Paul, I've fallen in love with you again! What a man! What an actor! From young to old nobody can match him. He's gone now, but will always be with us thru this magic medium.

Saw it the first time years ago when it was first made. All Paul Newman movies are great though and this one is no exception.

If only Hollywood could make more of these. It is a classic, and the cast was very, very good. I enjoyed seeing Paul Newman and 'Miss Daisy'. They are both missed, but not forgotten.

Great movie, rare among the selections on this site, and a rare and very good performance by all. The cop really cracked me up! and there were many delightful surprises. I had a missing father also whom I found late in life and tried to rectify the relationship. The wooden leg scene was a gas, Newman's humility always came through when the chips were down, His friends were real and his service to his community was awesome - including the Barney Fife style cop. Definitely made me feel good and I agree in depth with all of the other positive comments. Sorry I didn't see it sooner in life. Suggest more of this type - All of Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, James Earl Jones, Dorothy Bainbrige, Paul Robeson, It's a wonderful life (Mahalia Jackson version), Little Ceasar (James Cagney), Edward G. Robinson etc.

Wonderful cast and story.

By all means, read the novels of Richard Russo, which this movie is based on. All of his novels are excellent stories about flawed people trying to live any way they can. Another of his novels was made into a very good movie/miniseries adaptation "Empire Falls". Sully (as many of Russo' characters are) are low-income people who let life lead them by the nose and let impulse and desire rule their actions. They are not "evil" men, but they are often bad men through inaction. Most are selfish men who refuse to accept the obligations their society foists on them, whether it be something simple like pay taxes, to more drastic failings such as alcoholism and family abandonment.I think Richard Russo and John Irving are two writers who know the "soul" of what it is to be a man in this world if everything is not handed to you by birth and luck. Anyone who reads would be enriched to dive deeply into both.
