What an incredible piece of art this is. How did Gordon McLendon amass a 200 million dollar fortune? It certainly wasn't as a movie maker. Still, for 1959 this was an extraordinary low budget film, especially for those of us who have a fond nostalgia for cornball schmaltz. The blatant music promotion of young performer Don Sullivan (Chase) is so obvious in this flick that it's funny in retrospect. The incongruous disparity of the sickeningly cute The Mushroom Song being sung against a backdrop of the Giant Gila Monster wreaking havoc in the parking lot is my favorite scene. Surreal and hilarious. The idiotic dialogue, the completely ridiculous plot and all the stereotypical characters somehow add up to a memorable movie viewing experience. Definitely worth watching and inflicting upon your house guests. Top notch because it's so bottom drawer.
