I agree that it’s messed up, but she was a sacrifice to calm the water down. Unfortunately back in medieval time women got sacrificed in a belief that it would help the rest of the village. I use to live in a place where we had cliffs call the suicide cliffs because way back when an Indian village got sick so the braves blind folded their horses and rode them off a cliff hoping to take the sickness with them. It seems stupid and mean but that how some people thought. It was nice that she lived in the village latter with those who kind of saved her.
