Let me start off by saying I am an American. What you are seeing is a quite realistic display of our country's antics. If we have money invested in multinational ventures our politicians will do what ever is necessary to keep their electorate (in this case the conservative left-wing) happy. Forgive me for saying so, but you would probably not have to ask such questions if you were to pay a bit more attention to what our country does in the international community. Its called the "two-level game", in short.. Politicians have to make decisions that effect the people in our country and the people in other countries, and thus you see both levels of the game, our fellow citizens and the other people on the planet who's these politicians' decisions affect.
The decisions you see in this show that the show satires is a very real one. The United States Government, at the time this show was recorded, under the power of George W. Bush banned fetal stem cell research in America. He did so because the conservative left-wing insisted that it was a human life and that we didn't have the right to as they put it "play God". The process would have done nothing, but save lives. It could have been regulated and controlled, but instead it was banned all together setting the United States medical industry years behind their foreign contemporaries.
The procedure used to acquire fetal stem cells requires the removal of the gonad cells from aborted fetuses. The bashing, as you put it, could have mimicked an actual event. Left wing conservative religious types make up a very wealthy voter base, and their support goes along way to win elections, and the Republicans depend upon these conservatives for support during election time. And so you can see that the decisions made by our country's leaders are often made to appease and please the politician's electorate in hopes of being re-elected. Not because it makes sense anywhere outside of that.
