Well I think he really should of known better. He was telling the young navy cadets not to have sex on the ship, and how there could be crazy people on board and how it would make for a tricky situation.
Then he was a crummy role model, got drunk even though he admitted his father was an alcoholic (which pretty much means he should stay the hell away from alcohol) and slept with another drunk, young naive cadet.
That is just a recipe for disaster.
Furthermore, anyone who has gotten drunk can tell you, you are bound to not make proper decisions and do dumb things. As someone who has also at one time gotten way too drunk and been taken advantage of by someone who I thought was my friend, I can say had I been of sound mind... it'd never of happened. I never talked to the guy again even though all he did was make out with me and not sleep with me, because I had felt violated by the fact that he saw me drunk and took advantage of the situation.
I learned my lesson and never put myself in that situation again, but people have to understand that if you sleep with someone who is not in their right mind (ie on drugs, intoxicated, etc) than can be deemed the equivalent of "date rape."
You should never take advantage of anyone in this situation and have common sense about it. Both parties should, man or woman. I know a guy who got so drunk a woman took advantage of him and it ruined his marriage. Had he been sober I doubt he would of slept with her, but he did due to the fact that his decision making was impaired.
It can go either way. Obviously she was trying to make the best out of a bad situation. She also never said he raped her even though she may feel that she was taken advantage, and frankly I think she was taken advantage of.
