In what manner do you feel any of that relates to this subject? Setting aside the ridiculousness of expecting a fictional gypsy in a light comedy to represent the very best traits such a person might possess there's the fact that this character is AMERICAN. No Romani in America, real or fictional, is suffering the fate you mentioned.
Would it make a difference to you if Willa were from a Mafia family? If so then why? Were you angered by the portrayal of Italian-Americans in "The Sopranos"?

I'm deeply concerned by this entire portrayal of the Romani people. Playing to the old stereotypes is ridiculous and unconscionable. I have friends who have been working in Poland, serving in a Romani church, and the situation there is tragic. Throughout Europe these people are being brutalized, even murdered. Suddenly the nightmares of bygone eras are returning as shouts of, "To the ovens" are heard in the streets and their homes are taken from them and they are forced to flee, sometimes to entirely different countries. All because of misunderstandings, hatred and prejudice. It seems sad that one of our own American television programs would perpetrate the insensitivity and cultural biases.   See 13 other replies

The risk of walking past a group of men at night should be calculated by your location as well as legitimate cues to their character such as inebriation, gang affiliation, or aggressive demeanor. From everything I've read, you should simply assume that a Gypsy is a thief in the same way that you should assume walking past a group of young, black men at night is a bad idea. I don't consider myself a racist, but I have enough REAL world experience to know that certain behaviors are linked to certain ethnic groups with an alarming consistency. Also, when groups "tend to keep to themselves", it's often because they don't like outsiders and when someone doesn't like you, you should darn well be suspicious of them. I took a class in college dealing with intercultural relations and it opened my eyes even more to the fact that trying to be color blind is extremely foolish.   See 13 other replies
