Did it deserve to beat out Raging Bull for best picture? Absolutely not. Is it better that the book? No, not really. But is this a timeless film that still resonates in it's portrayl of depression, coming of age and upper class malaise? Definitely.
Donald Sutherland will break your heart. You'll want to throttle Mary Tyler Moore (a high compliment to her jarring work here). And as for Timothy Hutton... When I watch him in movies like this and Falcon And The Snowman -or even Beautiful Girls- I'm mystified why he never really became the movie star he should have become.
