This episode was probably one of the best episodes regarding violence in schools upon teachers. In this particular episode, Coach Reeves attempts to redirect negative behavior of a troubled student during gym class. The student refuses to participate in class and swings at Coach Reeves, landing a viscous punch across the nose. In reaction to the blow, Coach Reeves swings back. Although he was protecting himself, Coach Reeves feels guilty for hitting a student and refuses to file charges against him.
Meanwhile, all of the teachers are hopeful that he will make an example of the troubled student and force others to see what might happen if they try to harm a teacher. In typical fashion, the student tries to gain sympathy by blaming his home environment for his troubles. Fortunately, the coach makes a visit to his home only to find out that the student comes from a "normal" household with "good" parents who admit that they have had trouble with him for a long time. Well, by the end of the episode we learn that the student is more violent than anyone could have imagined.
The episode concludes with the viewers understanding why it was necessary for this "kid" to be prosecuted as an adult and not given a second chance. As an educator, I appreciate stories where you see that not every child can be saved. We do our best to help the ones who can, but the reality is we have to know when to let the law handle situations out of our control.
