It's difficult to look at movies from a critical perspective when people are stuck in one mode. In the US, a good movie is fast paced, action action action. The assumption is, if there is a long cut, or pause, it HAS TO BE deep or it's a mistake (making it boring). I do not believe the goal was to be artsy fartsy. I think the longer cuts were simply... Longer cuts. To absorbe the moment probably. It gave me the feeling of numbness which seems to be the main focus of the character.
As far as the "relationship" goes, I think it did a VERY good job at showing how difficult it is to connect with someone from a very different "world". It seems most people are blocked on the idea he's a loser nerd when in reality 99.99% of the people who posted on this forum would of been in the same shoes. We don't live in a movie, and this shows exactly that. If connecting with people from other countries were so simple, then the world would be a VERY different place.
Not to be racist but, the Asian girl did what most (not all) girls do in third world countries. You see it ALL THE TIME, it's digusting...
