I GOT NEXT is really a time capsule in hindsight. Here we see the wheels starting to turn in the fighting game scene following the wake of Street Fighter IV. A lot of names and faces that people know and love are featured here in some form or another--some being bittersweet to watch now. But you get to see the culture start to figure out where its place is, where these players want to go from here and so on. Seeing that laser-guided focus on the "FGC" is truly interesting to watch.
Unfortunately, where I GOT NEXT loses me (and based off of the other reviews/reactions, a lot of other people) is the wasted opportunities as a result of the focus. The Grand Finals at Evo could've been this great tense and jaw-dropping moment, but it just drops out. (A real shame too because the music at that moment was fantastic!) Because of this, the ending feels even more abrupt, even with the "Where Are They Now?" epilogue. If some kind of balance between the people and the game could have been established and kept, it would have made this a perfect look at the fighting game scene. It's still entertaining as is, but only to people who are already rooted in the scene.
