a) If you're giving something a negative review, don't give it five stars. That makes no sense.
b) He pointed out the inappropriateness of using chess metaphors when referring to actual human beings, then said "checkmate" to make sure the villain got it on his own terms. Did you seriously not pay attention to the sentences before he said "checkmate?"

You're right, it's not like the Captain got him to talk to him by telling him a sign was crooked, or how Natalie distracted him by telling him the books were out of order, or how he spent the entire chess match centering all the pieces.
Pay some freakin attention.
