Like "Little Shop of Horrors", this was made into a successful Broadway Musical and then remade as a film. Unlike the former original, this is actually worth watching for more than camp reasons. Apparently the current copy was modified for TV from its early film version, hence the less than optimal audio/visual quality. The acting and camera angles reflect the slow transition of film production away from the mold of stage productions and a beginning (however slight) of understanding of the subtleties that film can convey but the stage can't.
One wonders if perhaps the actor in the title role was cast for the aptness of his name: Tod Slaughter as the slaughterous Todd.
For me one of the nicest touches was the irony and symbolism of the Diabolical Sweeney Todd falling into the fiery pit of his own making.
