Exorcists in the show are drawn from every Religious Tradition. There are Bonzes, Temple Maidens and at least one Budhist Monk. Catholicism gets top billing because Westerners are more familiar with their style of Excorcism and Japnese will think it's exotic and cool. As for the guns and other weapons, every tradition holds that Demons, once manifested physically are vulnerable to physical attack. And holy weapons, whether they be blessed swords or blessed bullets should work just fine. See 2 other replies

I've been ignoring this for a while but the last few episodes have really irked me. Yes, I know it's only anime but seriously, if you're going to use the christian mythology/tradition at least try to integrate it in a logical way. Exorcists shooting "holy silver" bullets? A pope who gets selected by... I have no idea? Sometimes I just want to bang my head against the wall. When you say pope, or Vatican, or use bible verse it leads you to believe that things should work a certain way. But they don't. Ironically, I actually rather like the show. They're just not exorcists. Am I the only one thinking this?

This whole thing pisses me off. I knew that ugly old guy would end up evil. He just seemed like an a*shole. Ugh, so mad. I can't even function right now.
