Lived in NYC from the early 80's til the end of that decade, and there was still a bit of the 70's vibe this movie portrays. The heroin subculture was pretty full on in the Lower east side, and the crack boom hit in 85 and made the heroin issues look mild. Things were grim and depressing and dangerous in all sorts of corners of life. Unlike the glamourous Hollywood films, with their shiny NYC treatments, this film really lets you in on some of the reality of the characters and the mind sets of what NYC can feel like. Its not an action movie, or a comedy, though its gotta a bit of those elements. Its more a like a really good play, where you learn something about character and choices and how they can play out. I loved it, even if its flavor is bitter sweet.

The was no reason for this movie to be made. The pointless lives of the characters in the movie became boring after a while.
The actors were talented but under employed.

nothing funny about addiction....more of a sarcastic look at being an addict in NYC in the 70's. Good movie. Some great talent, Segal, DeNiro, Black all superb performances. As the reviewer below me mentioned, NYC in the 70's was sleazy and the movies made about it were true to to that...

I'm a sucker for movies that portray 1970's New York as a sleaze pit. If you're not, you probably won't find too much to enjoy in this movie. The junky that is the center of this story doesn't seem all that loveable to me, so who really cares what happens to him? Still, it is wonderful to see old New York in all its squalid glory. Other highlights: a lime green Chevy Vega (worst car ever made?), Robert DeNiro (excellent performance), Karen Black (strange character, but she's wonderful). I wonder how Paula Prentiss got such prominent billing in this movie? She is wasted in more ways than one...
