First thing that strikes me about this "documentary" is the fact that the majority of the narratives (people, and the overall length of the narratives) come from a white perspective. The "film-makers" are all white men, and I believe the longest narrative from a non-white perspective comes from the young man in Taos, NM.
What I got from this "documentary" is that, basically a bunch of white boys from Dartmouth used their privilege, connections, and access to education and opportunity, to have a three month long vacation where they attempted to communication and find meaning among the people of "our" generation.
Our generation? It seems interesting to me, since the director was a history major, that they took such a simple linear perspective on time, history and place, their belief that people who are simply born during a certain time have some type of connection. I can't tell if this "documentary" is sincere in its attempt to somehow enlighten or change the world... or if these college grad (privilege experiencing) white dudes are just visually masturbating across my computer screen for an hour.

My only wish is this documentary would have been part one in a series. I have personally traveled across the country and found we're not all that different. With few exceptions, we all want to live our lives and better ourselves and those around us. At 29 I'm at the very edge of the generation documented and I'm looking forward to the decades ahead.

On recommendation, I watched this documentary and found it to be thought-provoking and agree with a friend who said it should put a spark in the minds of all who watch it. What stood out for me was the diversity of the people interviewed and the fact that people were so open and willing to talk about their lives to a stranger and on camera. It is an interesting cross-section of people covering patriotism, life satisfaction/discontent, dreamers vs. reality, paths chosen, education, religion, morality, and attitudes. The people interviewed were insightful, impressive (ranging from the man who earned $5/hr. and bought a home to Zuckerberg still in his twenties and a billionaire), disturbing, and entertaining. Such an interesting array of Americans. It is a documentary for discussion and those discussions keep taking me back to a part of the documentary I want to view again. Kudos to those who produced this and for the scenery shots - really beautiful.

Though listed as created or at least released in 2011, footage includes anti-Bush protests dating the project to 2008 or before. The young subjects are generally some mixture of pathetic but hopeful, just like the filmmakers' effort itself, full of self-indulgent panoramas and pop music. This would have been much more interesting after the recession, but then maybe these bratty college graduates wouldn't have had enough of their parents' dough to criss-cross the country, condescending to kids of lesser means and making a hopelessly inane tribute to their own obtuse grasp of what the future might hold.
