There are lots of things about this story to not like: Sharon is essentially date-raped; being taken advantage of by a trusted member of the community isn't a just consequence (or punishment, for those puritanical members of the audience) for being young, drunk, and stupid. Later she's viciously cut out of the community, solely blamed for a situation that isn't her fault. And finally I think most folks watching this will cringe to see a heavily pregnant teenager out getting trashed.
However, Sharon is a saucy girl. She stands up to the man who took advantage of her, and while the gossip mill gets to her, she doesn't let it break her. What a wonderful sense of humor. And of course, her family, though affected, is endlessly supportive. This is a movie about being resilient, and being Irish, and of course the two go hand in hand (although I'm partial, being Irish myself).
