I felt compelled to write this review in response to the only other review for this movie. Down by Law creates tension in the listlessness of life behind bars and in the desolate swamps of Louisiana. All well delivered in the dynamic between Tom Waits as the taciturn beatnik deejay, John Lurie as the tough guy with a heart of gold, and Roberto Benigni as a happy-go-lucky (what he's best at) Italian drifter. The soundtrack (supplied by Waits of course) keeps the mood dark and the writing lightens it up with a subtle sense of humor. If you fall asleep, it's not the movie that's dumb.
