Description	Rushing to the duel that will make him nationally famous, Nakayama Yasubei (Shintaro Katsu) encounters Tange Tenzen (Raizo Ichikawa), a young Shogunate official. The two men develop a deep friendship, one that endures even after Tenzen marries the woman that Yasubei secretly loves. But fate cuts deeper than any sword, and the two men find themselves supportng opposing clans. Yasubei will soon become immortal as one of the legendary 47 Ronin, and Tenzen is honor-bound to protect their intended target, the infamous Lord Kira. The swords of two friends will soon be drawn - and once a samurai draws his sword, it must be stained with blood before it can be resheathed!

I got kinda lost w/the respective houses & it seems like subtitle overkill; but alright if you're into this particular genre of movies.

It was strange to see such a young Shintaro Katsu (Zatoichi) in the beautifully made film. The plot is complex and the details can be a bit arcane, but the basic elements of love, abduction, revenge, loyalty, honor, and tragedy are all there. In fact, it is so stylized that it seems almost like kabuki theatre. The subtitles were easy to see, but they were often flashed on the screen too quickly to read. Also, notes explaining some of the nuances of japanese or the significance of a scene occasionally appeared at the top of the screen simultaneously with the subtitles at the bottom. I liked it a lot, but the film might not be everyone's cup of tea.
