That's right, I'm giving a shout-out to whoever designed the captions.

I watch a lot of foreign films that are captioned. But many words that get translated into English still don't make any sense if you are not from that culture.

But this film actually took the time and space to explain those terms that foreigners would not understand even with the word translated into English.

I would love to see this approach done in all other foreign movies too. Whoever came up with this concept deserves an Oscar or something!!! :P

"a handicapped person that seems harmless"

That makes no sense. Within the first few minutes of the movie it is clearly shown that this guy is a bad one to the core.

**Spoiler for "Usual Suspects"**
Contrast that with Usual Suspects, which spent 99% of the film showing that the lead was decent and harmless.

The acting was great in this, especially the leading man. The lead character portrays an evil genius and ruthlessness along the lines of a Rasputin. His bad deeds can make you gasp with shock and gall. There are also very good plot twists.

I have never seen nor wanted to see any of the "Zatoichi" films. The idea of blind swordsman just didn't interest me. However the lead actor was so good in this, I have changed my mind. And I'm going to watch one that he is in.

And lastly...this movie had the best Closed Captions I've ever seen!! I'm someone who watches a lot of foreign films with captions. And it was fantastic that the captions actually gave EXPLANATIONS of certain words that would otherwise have not made any sense to an English speaker. Bravo!

This film reminded me of the Keyser Söze character from Usual Suspects. Here we have a handicapped person that seems harmless, but is really a criminal mastermind. He rises from the slums to become the highest ranking master massuer in the land.

Outrageous, scandalous! I will certainly watch this classic again, and again. This movie is an idol-breaker! An eye-opener. It is worth every second of your time, especially for Zatoichi fans.

I've never seen Katsu in a role like this before. He does a wonderfully scary job. It's NOT Zatoichi.

Once again, the acting is great in this one. The storyline's solid, and the characters develop well. On the other hand, this isn't Zatoichi. This is Zatoichi's evil twin. Enjoy!
