You friend is mistaken. Can they really speak for all "traditional Japanese" salary men? Stereotypically, the French will detest you for butchering their language, but we don't care. If someone tries to speak Japanese, we will listen to what they have to say. I am really hard pressed to think of a society that would consider an outsider showing interest in the language/culture an insult. Unless the guy is a total ass, most people will think nothing of it at worst and praise you for trying to speak the language at best. Besides, most "traditional Japanese businessmen" speak Japanese. Keep in mind, we look good when we praise another q;) I am sure for many foreigners it can even get annoying. Let's say you have used chopsticks your entire life... people will still praise you for using chopsticks very well. 「お上手ですね、おはしの使い方」とか。。。I even praise people for uttering 1 word in Japanese... call it habit. But I hope your friend's financial advice is better that his/her cultural advice q;)_
