I am a gun owner who lives in a run down inner city neighborhood. I understand the concern of being a victim of a break-in. Having a rifle accessible to me helps me to sleep better at night. I also understand that we need to be responsible with how we handle, store, and purchase firearms. While I thought the woman was excessive and preachy, I do agree that firearms should only be sold by federally licensed firearms dealers. It would reduce quantitative access to firearms within the criminal underworld. More importantly we know who has firearms at their disposal. It won't solve the problems that we have been facing but it would help to curb the tide of gun violence. Without running a background check with a psychological profile of a person, we risk letting a potentially dangerous tool get into the wrong hands. I also agree with city ordinances against assault weapons. The environment is completely different between a crowded neighborhood and small town U.S.A. It's important to maintain some limitations in order to ensure public safety. The firearm movement worries me by being too overbearing. It doesn't represent the average American, and I fear, detracts from the public opinion towards the Second Amendment. Some compromise would enable us to move forward to a place where the average American is comfortable with the situation. Extremist gun owners who act in a flashy manner (desiring military grade weapons) do the cause an injustice. It makes the cause of an Armed (and free) society less palatable. It adds fuel to the opposition's flame.
