The up & down (mostly down) story of her life is remarkably sad, and still somewhat mysterious -- would make a great bio-pic.
Some tidbits:
> Much of her bio is unverified -- even the year of her birth: "Birth year usually given as 1919; but her autobiography ... indicate 1922. The 1920 United States Census shows that her father Harry Ockelman is unmarried and childless, while in 1930 Constance (Veronica) is listed as seven years old." [1]
> Considered "difficult to work with" -- many would not work with her, or quit do to "creative differences". e.g.: Joel McCrea, ... turned down the co-starring role in I Married a Witch, saying, "Life's too short for two films with Veronica Lake." [2]
> Expelled from Catholic boarding school; married 4 times, worked as a barmaid after her movie career crashed, made a minor come-back, died from illnesses related to alcoholism.
> A homeless Veronica Lake was sighted at Union Station in Los Angeles.
> Her ashes sat on a funeral home's shelf until 1976 ... resurfaced in a New York antique store in October 2004. [1]
