Scientists ("these people") form ("get") estimates (like "time frames") by making direct observations and mathematical measurements of natural phenomena, many of which have predictable or constant attributes (things like the speed of light, the weight of a given molecule, etc.), then use that info to extrapolate larger or smaller examples of similar systems. Honestly. That's why science has more credibility than mythology or guesses. It's backed by verifiable knowledge and facts.
