Description	John Ford was best known for his westerns, but he also made a brace of dramas that hold up magnificently, none more so than The Long Voyage Home. Working from quartet of Eugene O'Neill plays, Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland created a hauntingly dark dramatic universe, populated with his usual stock company of players (Thomas Mitchell, Barry Fitzgerald, Ward Bond et al), augmented by John Wayne, then a newly-minted star in the wake of Ford's Stagecoach, in the role of the naïve Swedish sailor Olsen -- one of the last times the actor would play a character that was not a variation on the bold, heroic “John Wayne” figure.

But the Spanish also controlled the Caribbean for some time, nearly 200 years. So its not to be unexpected to think that there will be some Spanish speaking people that would qualify as natives.

good story about the sea at that time period....did wonder about the start of the movie they're talking about the "natives" of the west indies, but the women boarding all spoke spanish....when english and french are the languages of the caribbean...

The immersive film-making creates more of an adventurous experience than a "movie". Rather than having a plot, per se, we are taken aboard a merchant ship and join the crew on their "long voyage home". Story-wise, the focus is on the journey and not the destination.

This is a movie that I lived as well as watched. It was rich in every way.
