| Description | John Ford was best known for his westerns, but he also made a brace of dramas that hold up magnificently, none more so than The Long Voyage Home. Working from quartet of Eugene O'Neill plays, Ford and cinematographer Gregg Toland created a hauntingly dark dramatic universe, populated with his usual stock company of players (Thomas Mitchell, Barry Fitzgerald, Ward Bond et al), augmented by John Wayne, then a newly-minted star in the wake of Ford's Stagecoach, in the role of the naïve Swedish sailor Olsen -- one of the last times the actor would play a character that was not a variation on the bold, heroic “John Wayne” figure. |
