This was a rather gripping episode, based in psychological drama; instead of dealing with aliens or monsters or foreign governments (though a little of the latter is thrown in), it explored much more realistic perils of submarine travel--the crushing pressures of the dreat depths and the effect the stress of that danger can have on the human psyche. Things are amped up a little by a sci-fi "fear gas", but really it's almost not needed; one can imagine that the nightmare of something going wrong on a deep-sea vessel while in the abyss must always be in the back of the minds of its crew, no matter how experienced or mission-hardened they are.
Celebrity ventroliquist Edger Bergen guest-stars, as well as Lloyd Bochner, who gives a nicely turned performance as the villain.
Good use is made of a lot of tense, sweaty close-ups in this one; and indeed, toward the end, turning up the heat in the sub is a key to their salvation. One guy takes his shirt off, but alas, no one strips down completely. :(
