Would probably have given a higher rating if the film weren't so painful to watch. After three attempts, I can now say that writing, acting, and photographic treatment are superb for the subject matter.
I do believe that the film needs an informed audience for them to grasp the true and full pathology portrayed here. (See Barbara Lewis' review below for an informed discussion.)
Hulu's brief description of the drama, however, is misleading. Rather than this being an account of how the Rowlands character's family tries to save her from herself in the process of her emotional breakdown, it is more about how they contribute. With a narcissistic, violent, controlling husband and passive complying family members, the only glimmer of hope seems to be in the children's apparent recognition that Mom needs protecting from Dad. The "identified patient" here is misidentified.
An eery but accurate portrayal of how codependency and narcissism can destroy lives.
