I've owned this for years on VHS and was always bummed out that it was only in "pan and scan " aka "full screen " even though the cover said it was "letterbox. " Thanks to Hulu, I can finally see what I was missing. Ever since I heard the song "Cassavetes " by Fugazi, I sought out his movies( I know this is Elaine May's film but he portrays Nick since her story's so brutally honest ) because they were a great band with lots of songs and this was the only one that was named after someone who was the subject of the song. His directorial debut "Shadows " is completely one of a kind. Lots of pictures have tackled the topic of a black and white couple but it's the only one I know of which features no racial slurs. The NAACP offered an endorsement of it but Cassavetes refused because he wanted someone from below the Mason-Dixon line to stumble upon the picture and come away from the viewing with a more objective point of view. He knew that if the NAACP endorsed it, a white southerner's chances of seeing it would be microscopically small.
